Bio

“Reformation is born when truth is recovered, not reinvented.”

Junker Jorg

Formed in 1999, Denver-based metal band Junker Jorg takes its name from the alias of Martin Luther—one of the central figures of the Reformation. After Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg church on October 31, 1517, the resulting uproar helped change Christianity forever.

Summoned to defend his beliefs at the Diet of Worms, Luther was condemned as a heretic and effectively marked for death. Duke Frederick sheltered him in Wartburg Castle, disguised him as a knight, and gave him the name “Junker Jorg.”

Junker Jorg blends Christian history, complex theological themes, and hard music to stir spiritual awareness in a way that is uniquely their own. The goal isn’t noise for noise’s sake—it’s thought-provoking music that confronts drift, calls for renewal, and echoes the truth that reformation is sometimes necessary for the church to be equipped and restored.

As Junker Jorg refined its sound, what they came to describe as “brutally beautiful”, they quickly gained attention in the local scene. Their momentum accelerated after a strong showing at a local battle of the bands hosted by Denver rock station KBPI, where legendary DJ Willie B took notice and became an early supporter of the band. That support culminated in a defining moment in 2000, when Junker Jorg was given the opportunity to open for Metallica during the Summer Sanitarium Tour at Mile High Stadium.

Their debut album, Diet of Worms, was released with Cellar Records in 2000. The three-song EP Before the Machine followed on MP3.com in March 2001. Their last full-length release, Ignite the Machine, arrived in March 2002 via YoungSide Records and was recorded at Cellar Records studios with producer Todd Joos. After the release of Ignite the Machine, Junker Jorg embarked on their most extensive tour to date, spending over two months on the road alongside Disciple on the Not Rockstars 2K2 Tour, performing 64 shows in 66 days across the United States.
